World Data Center for Seismology, Denver Reply to: sedas@neis.cr.usgs.gov or neic@usgs.gov The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A major earthquake occurred about 45 miles (75 km) west-southwest of Raoul Island, Kermadec Islands or 640 miles (1020 km) northeast of Auckland, New Zealand at 8:41 PM MDT today, Jun 2, 2001 (Jun 03 at 2:41 PM local time in New Zealand). A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 7.0 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. There have been no reports of damage.
