World Data Center for Seismology, Denver Reply to: sedas@neis.cr.usgs.gov or neic@usgs.gov The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred IN THE KURIL ISLANDS about 105 km (65 miles) south-southeast of Kurilsk at 6:40 PM MDT today, May 24, 2001 (May 25 at 11:40 AM local time in Kuril Islands). A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 6.7 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. No damage is expected.
